TAs:
TAs for CHEM 1CL are also the TAs for CHEM 1C. You are welcome to go to any of the TAs office hours even if you are not taking CHEM 1CL. See the course website for exact office hour times, locations, and TA email addresses.

CLAS:
Organized tutor groups and drop-in sessions. The organized tutor groups meet twice weekly for 1 hour. For more information go to their website: clas.sa.ucsb.edu. I would highly recommend signing up for a CLAS tutor group. I have heard lots of positive feedback from students about CLAS.

NO MAKE-UP MIDTERMS WILL BE GIVEN FOR ANY REASON. ONLY PEOPLE THAT RECEIVE AND INCOMPLETE IN THE CLASS WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE UP THE FINAL.

If you miss a midterm for any reason (sick, sports event, funeral, wedding, etc.), your final exam will count for 40% of your grade.

You must take the final to pass the class.

If you take all the midterms and score higher on the final than your lowest midterm score, your final will count for 40% of your grade.

• All quizzes will be given on Canvas.
• You will have a 12-hour window to complete quizzes between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm. Make sure you start them with plenty of time so you can finish by 9:00 pm. Quizzes are automatically submitted at 9:00 pm by Canvas.
• You will have 30 minutes to complete each quiz.
• The quizzes will be a combination of short answer and multiple-choice questions.
• No partial credit is awarded for incorrect answers.
• Quizzes should be taken with only the exam information sheet, calculator, and scratch paper.
• If you do not take the quiz by the due date, you are able to still see the questions and answers by clicking on the quiz. DO NOT ANSWER THE QUESTIONS, just hit submit and the correct answers will be shown. If you answer the questions, your grade will be changed to -2 points.

• The midterms and final will be a combination of short answer and multiple-choice questions.
• No partial credit is awarded for incorrect answers.
• Exams will be graded and returned to you on GradeScope: gradescope.com
• Calculators are permitted.
• You will get an exam information page which contains the periodic table, constants, unit conversions, and equations.
• You must bring your student I.D. to the final.
• If you touch or look at your cell phone during the exam you will receive a 0.
• If you are sitting next to someone with the same version of the exam, you will lose 5 points.
• Headphones are NOT allowed during the exams.
• If you receive a 0 on the exam because of any of the reasons above you will not be able to drop or replace that exam.
• If you are still working on your test after time is called, you will lose 5 points on the exam.

• Online homework will be assigned through ALEKS (aleks.com). Your ALEKS course code for this class is VERTR-43Q3T.

• Click on "Add/Change Classes"

• You should not need to purchase an account because you should have purchased a year subscription when you started Chem 1A
• Please verify that your perm number is correct in ALEKS. To do this, log into your account. Click on the ≡ icon (3 bars) in the upper left corner of the screen. This will bring up a menu in which you can choose "manage my classes." Click the down arrow next to your name and select "account settings." Click "edit" next to your school and check and change your perm number, if needed.

• Click on "SIGN UP NOW"
• In the box provided, enter the course code: VERTR-43Q3T
• Purchase a 90 day access code
• When you put in your personal information there will be a box that says "optional" enter your student ID; you MUST enter your perm number (enter seven numbers, do NOT include any dashes or spaces). If your perm number is not entered or wrong you will not get credit for the assignments.
• If you need to edit your account (for instance, to fix your perm number) you can do this by logging into your account. Click on the ≡ icon (3 bars) in the upper left corner of the screen. This will bring up a menu in which you can choose "manage my classes." Click the down arrow next to your name and select "account settings." Click "edit" next to your school. You will then be able to enter your correct perm number.
• If this is your first time using ALEKS you should look at the ALEKS instructions posted at: people.chem.ucsb.edu/feldwinn/darby/ALEKS.htm
• Due dates for ALEKS will be announced in class and sent to your UCSB email. ALEKS assignments are due at 10 pm on the due date.
• Your lowest ALEKS score can be replaced with up to 7 points earned from pre-chapter assessments.
• If you do better on the final then on your total ALEKS score, your percent on the final can replace all of your homework scores.
• Problems out of the book will also be assigned for each chapter. Although these problems will not be collected they are REQUIRED homework for the class. I have seen a direct correlation between the number of book problems that students do and their overall grade in the class. Do not expect to get an A or B in the class without doing the book problems.

• We will use the iClicker Student system during class.
• Each question is worth 0.2 points.
• 0.1 points will be awarded for trying the question.
• 0.1 points will be awarded for each correct answer.
• Up to 12 iClicker points can be used to replace your lowest quiz score.
• There are no excuses for missed iClicker points.
• More than 12 iClicker points will be available during the quarter.

• Before each chapter a pre-chapter assessment will be given on Canvas.
• Due dates for pre-chapter assessments will be announced in class and sent to your UCSB email. Pre-chapter assessments are due at 10 pm on the due date.
• Each pre-chapter assessment is worth 1.5 points.
• Up to 7 pre-chapter assessment points can be used to replace your lowest ALEKS score.
• Do not look anything up for the pre-chapter assessments; you are only graded on completion, not on correct answers.
