Michael Gaultois@UCSB

PhD Candidate, Seshadri Group

image

I joined the Seshadri group at UC Santa Barbara in Fall 2011, and am working on the development of biphasic metal oxides. It has been found that new and desireable properties arise when multiple phases are in intimate contact, so there is considerable interest in this potentially fruitful class of materials. Although my work is focused on metal oxides, this is part of a larger research effort at the MRL to develop a fundamental understanding of the properties that arise from the interaction of multiple phases in proximity.

The MRL@UCSB

One of the top five materials research facilities in the world

image

With research activities focused on three major interdisciplinary research groups (IRG), The Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) serves as the innovation engine for discoveries in new materials. The facility is home to a scientific and engineering community that creates new collective knowledge and fosters the next generation of scientific leaders.

Who am I?

A big fan of fountain pens, smoked gouda, M.C. Escher, and high fives, Michael Gaultois is pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemistry with a focus on the preparation and structural characterization of functional inorganic materials – particularly those with structural disorder. Proper characterization is critical to understanding the behaviour of materials, and is crucial to guiding the rational design of materials and optimization of desired properties.
